Summer Is the Best Time to Scan Your Old Photos & Negatives

Before Arizona heat and humidity finish what decades already started, here’s what you need to know.

Somewhere in a closet, a garage, or the back of a filing cabinet, there’s a box. Inside it: prints with curling edges, envelopes of 35mm negatives, maybe a sleeve of 120 medium-format film. Every summer that passes, those materials are losing ground.

Most people intend to “get around to” scanning their family archives. Summer is when that intention actually matters — not because of a marketing season, but because of chemistry, physics, and the honest reality of what heat does to photographic materials over time.

Why Photos and Negatives Degrade

Photographic prints and film negatives are not permanent. They are made of layers of organic materials — gelatin, cellulose acetate, polyester, silver particles, dye clouds — all of which react to their environment in predictable, irreversible ways.

Heat Acceleration

Chemical reactions that fade dyes and oxidize silver roughly double in speed for every 10°C rise in temperature.

Humidity Cycling

Fluctuating moisture causes prints to warp and negatives to stick together — often permanently.

Vinegar Syndrome

Acetate-base film from the 1950s–1990s releases acetic acid as it breaks down, accelerating neighboring materials.

Light Exposure

Even indirect UV from windows yellows paper fibers and bleaches color dyes in prints over months.

In Phoenix and the surrounding Valley, summer storage conditions are especially punishing. Garage temperatures routinely exceed 120°F. Even climate-controlled homes fluctuate when AC cycles off at night. That box in the closet is experiencing more thermal stress than photos stored in, say, Minnesota.

Worth knowing

Color negative film from the 1970s and ’80s is among the most vulnerable material in home archives. The magenta dye layer fades first, often leaving an orange-red cast that is difficult to restore after the fact — but easy to capture faithfully before significant fading occurs.

What “Scanning” Actually Preserves

A high-resolution scan creates a lossless digital copy of what exists right now. It doesn’t reverse degradation that has already occurred, but it stops the clock. From that point forward, you have a master file that can be reprinted, color-corrected, and shared indefinitely — at full quality — regardless of what happens to the original.

This is meaningfully different from photographing prints with a phone camera. A dedicated film scanner captures:

  • Full tonal range including deep shadow detail that phone cameras clip
  • Film grain structure — the actual texture of the original emulsion
  • Color accuracy from calibrated profiles, not auto-white-balance guessing
  • Resolution high enough to make large prints later — 35mm scanned at 300-600 dpi
  • Negatives inverted correctly, including color masking on color negative film

What to Gather Before You Bring It In

You don’t need to organize everything perfectly — but a few minutes of sorting will make the process faster and cheaper.

Prints

Separate prints by approximate size if you can (4×6, 5×7, 8×10). Remove rubber bands, which leave permanent indentations. If prints are stuck together, do not try to separate them yourself — bring them as-is and let us assess.

Negatives & Slides

Note the format if you know it: 35mm strips, 120/medium-format rolls, 4×5 sheet film, or mounted 35mm slides. If you smell a sharp vinegar odor from your negative sleeves, store them away from other materials and mention it at drop-off.

Unknowns

Bring them anyway. We’ve identified and scanned everything from Kodachrome slides from the 1950s to APS cartridges from the late 1990s. If it was made for a camera, we’ve likely scanned it.

Pro tip

Prioritize color prints and negatives over black-and-white. Silver-based B&W materials are significantly more stable than color dye-based ones. If your collection is mixed, start with color — those are on a shorter clock.
